What is this Indicator?
This indicator shows the deaths per 100,000 population attributable to motor vehicle crashes.

Why this is important: Motor vehicle-related injuries kill more children and young adults than any other single cause in the United States. More than 41,000 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes each year, and crash injuries result in about 500,000 hospitalizations and four million emergency department visits annually.

The Healthy People 2010 national health target is to reduce the age-adjusted motor vehicle crash death rate to 9.2 deaths per 100,000 population.

Technical Note: Motor vehicle deaths were divided by provisional population estimates, and multiplied by 100,000 to determine deaths per 100,000 population. The distribution is based on 58 California counties.

Source of population estimates: U.S. Census Bureau.
